As my family moves away from relying on the grocery store, we move into creating more and more of our food from scratch.
Hard cheeses take an incredible amount of work. You have to get everything right, from the cheese cultures you use to the amount of pressure you use in a cheese press. There’s a lot of room for error!
Simple, quick, soft cheeses are a great place to start in any homesteading journey. Enter in – farmer’s cheese! A soft, spreadable, homemade cheese you can make in under an hour.
But not just any farmer’s cheese. It’s fall, y’all! We’re putting a modern spin on a rustic classic.
Whipped pumpkin spice farmer’s cheese is the perfect replacement for cream cheese. It comes together quickly and can be easily adapted to fit your preferences.

What is Farmer’s Cheese?
Farmer’s cheese is a soft, homemade cheese. It’s incredibly easy to make!
Farmer’s cheese is made from curdling milk, straining the whey, and pressing the curds.
You may have heard it called cottage cheese. However, farmer’s cheese is a variation of cottage cheese. Cottage cheese usually has milk mixed back into it to give it a lighter texture. Farmer’s cheese has been pressed, therefore the finished product is firmer.
Farmer’s cheese can also be created from a variety of milks, like cow’s, goat’s, and sheep’s milk.
How to Use Flavored Farmer’s Cheese
Farmer’s cheese can be used as a spread on toast and bagels or as a dip for crackers and pretzels. When you flavor your farmer’s cheese, you add so many more flavor combinations to your kitchen!
In this recipe, you get a warm, sweet farmer’s cheese. The warmth comes from the cloves and ginger in the pumpkin pie spice. The sweetness comes from the maple syrup.

- Pumpkin Spice Blend
- Pumpkin Puree
- Maple Syrup
- Honey, optional

If you haven’t already, blend your farmer’s cheese in a food processor until smooth.

If necessary, stir your pumpkin spice farmer’s cheese after blending.
Before serving, sprinkle the top of your farmer’s cheese with more pumpkin pie spice. For added flavor, add a drizzle of honey to the top!
Store in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to a week.
Recipe Substitutions
I love that this is a warm, sweet recipe. But you can easily play with the flavor profile by making a few adjustments.
You can easily swap maple syrup for brown sugar in this recipe. If you like honey as a natural sweetener, honey would work, too!
If you are worried about making your own cheese at home, you can substitute the farmer’s cheese itself for ricotta cheese or plain cream cheese. If you plan on using plain cream cheese, let your cream cheese come to room temperature.
If you don’t have a food processor, this recipe comes together just fine using a stand mixer.
It’s important to note you cannot substitute heavy cream for farmer’s cheese in this recipe. Even when whipped, the heavy cream will not have a sturdy, spreadable consistency like the farmer’s cheese does.
If you want to swap the farmer’s cheese for heavy cream to make a pumpkin spice whipped cream, you may have to alter the recipe completely. In this kitchen, we are all about experimenting! If you create something tasty, comment on this blog post and let me know what you created!

Is That Enough Pumpkin?
If you are looking to add a bit of vitamin C to your diet this fall, add another tablespoon or so of pumpkin to your farmer’s cheese!
Pumpkin puree is a versatile ingredient that mixes well in this recipe. So a little goes a long way!
What to Serve with Pumpkin Spice Farmer’s Cheese
I love serving crackers and pretzels with homemade farmer’s cheese. But the options don’t stop there!
You can serve things like apple slices and gingersnap cookies alongside this spread! You can also opt for other pumpkin spice-flavored serving vessels, like bagels or bread, to really double down on all the pumpkin spice goodness.
