This DIY beeswax lotion bar recipe is a great introduction to creating your own natural products with natural ingredients.
This DIY beeswax lotion bar embodies a lot of what we think of when we think of natural products.
It’s different. It’s customizable. And it can be high quality so long as you select the best possible ingredients.
This solid bar has a net weight of about 2 ounces. And I think it’s one of the simplest recipes you will find on this blog!

Can I Make Lotion Bars at Home?
Lotion bars are one of the best recipes to make at home. And this one only requires three ingredients!
Why Make a Beeswax Lotion Bar?
Body lotion bars are a great option if you’re looking for a product with an extended shelf life.
Natural beauty products don’t tend to have a long shelf life to begin with. But a basic recipe like this with ingredients that are already shelf-stable, you’re creating a lotion bar that will actually last you.
And you aren’t using artificial preservatives to get you this shelf-stable product! Incredible!
Because this is a solid block of lotion, it also takes up less space than conventional lotions or whipped lotions. I store mine in metal tins (like this one).
Beeswax lotion bars are also great for dry skin or sensitive skin. As a family with both, we have been taking advantage of the hydrating qualities found in coconut oil. I personally use the bar for a bit of extra moisture after hand washing my dishes.
Finally, this DIY lotion bar recipe is completely customizable.
If you’re looking for a soothing moisturizer, consider adding shea butter and cocoa butter to your beeswax lotion bars. The fatty acids in both nourish your skin and are safe to use daily.
However, if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients in this recipe you should avoid them.
Creating a DIY lotion bar is also a great way to use some of your favorite ingredients. You can add a sweet scent, your favorite essential oil blends and even make honey lotion bars!
I do have to say – my favorite bar so far is an unscented lotion bar.
What You Need to Create DIY Beeswax Lotion Bars
To make your own beeswax lotion bars, you will need 3 ingredients – olive oil, coconut oil and beeswax.
For a more luxurious bar, you can also add cocoa butter and shea butter.
If you’re adding essential oils, add 15 drops per batch. Each batch yields 5, 2 ounce bars. Which is incredible – you don’t use much beeswax at all!
How to Make Beeswax Lotion Bars
Create a double boiler and melt together the beeswax, coconut oil and olive oil.
Stir frequently.
When the last of the beeswax melts, add essential oils and immediately pour into silicone molds (I used these).
Let harden, preferably overnight, prior to use.
Store in a cool, dry container at room temperature.
When you’re ready to use, melt the bar using body heat by rubbing the bar over your hands, legs, arms, etc.

What To Do with Your Beeswax Lotion Bars
Homemade lotion bars are the perfect way to introduce someone to natural living. I talked a bit about it in the beginning of this blog post.
Natural products are customizable, can be high quality and they introduce the conversation about choosing better products. Because they behave differently than commercial products, those who are curious about clean living really get a chance to experience natural products and understand why the difference in selection is crucial to their own health.
Aside from introducing your friends to natural products, they also make great gifts!
My batch makes 5, 2.5 inch wide by 1 inch deep lotion bars.
Because one tends to last so long, you have four to give away with more than enough time to make more for when you will need them again.

More on Natural Living with The Learning Life
We got started on our natural living journey because my husband is a career firefighter. Due to his risk of exposure, we knew we needed to reduce his exposure to toxins in our own home.
We have been working diligently for years sourcing great ingredients to work with in our kitchen, as well as rotating our products known to do more harm than good.
We have switched to glass, stainless steel and cast iron cookware. We solely use olive oil and coconut oil instead of canola oil.
What About Other Areas of Life?
Since we spend the majority of our time in the kitchen, it just made sense to start there.
And now that I have a good foundation there, I’ve turned my attention to other areas of my home.
Tackling beauty products next made the most sense because our skin is the largest organ on our body.
I’ve switched my dry shampoo and almost all of my skin care routine to quality, beneficial products.
Now, I’m working on lip balms, sugar scrubs and more! Check out my sugar scrub recipes – these also make incredible gifts!
How Natural Beauty Fueled Our Homestead Passion
If you’re interested in starting to work on healthy living outside your home, consider starting a garden or raising chickens!
Taking control of truly sourcing where your food comes from is just another way you can make profound steps in your natural living journey.
When you raise your own chickens, you get to control what they’re being fed, and thus, what your eggs and meat are made of. When you raise your own garden, you get ultimate control over things like what soil is used, what is sprayed on your plants and even what kind of plant is produced!
If you’re unable to raise your own garden, eggs or meat, consider working with farmers in your area (and don’t be discouraged if you have to travel more than 45 minutes – we have to travel for milk, beef and pork).
In my area, we have multiple farmer’s markets every Saturday. And some of them even operate other days of the week, like Sundays or Tuesdays. From about April to October, my area isn’t lacking for opportunity to work with local farmers!
Since finding these resources, I’ve been able to eliminate my need for the grocery store for beef, pork, strawberries, flour, oats and even some nuts and spices.
In 2024, I was able to replace the grocery store with local farmers for berries and honey!
Want to Grow Your Own Homestead Community?
Another great tip would be to utilize this network of people! I talk all about building your network in my ebook, Making a Micro Homestead.
For only $5, you can find out how to start your micro homestead and where to find the community you will need to thrive.
By building my own community, I found a beef farmer who lets customers work directly with the butcher, so I’m able to save my cow bones for broth, fat for tallow and organs for my chickens. How great is that?
And because I’ve been committed to purchasing from her and watched her farm grow, she now produces pork that we eat, too!
The homesteading community is nothing short of incredible. From area farmers to working with a local feed store for how to best feed my chickens – it’s a network of dedicated people wanting to produce the best product for everyone they know.

All of this information can seem overwhelming. I know!
But if you’re convicted about truly living a more natural lifestyle, start by making one small change. That’s how all change happens! One step at a time!
I have a lot of information in my Homesteading Tab and Wholesome Life tab about natural living and the steps you can take to live a more natural lifestyle, too.
More on Natural Products
Sourcing your beauty products is just as important as sourcing where your food comes from. That’s why I’d like to encourage you to know where you’re getting your products from!
Did you know it’s actually incredibly hard to find organic beeswax?
Quite a few of my friends are beekeepers. One beekeeper realized one critical fact – organic beeswax may not be a product we can get our hands on.
Per his research, you would have to promise that pesticides and other harmful ingredients weren’t sprayed on any pollen the bees collected for a 3 to 5 mile radius of the beehive.
Wow!
You also need to consider the fact that things like bee pollen and honeycomb are necessary for the proper health and longevity of the beehive.
The beeswax, luckily, is a by product of what they produce. Through glands on the underside of the bee, beeswax is excreted to both create the honeycomb and cap it when its full.
Beekeepers then collect the wax and melt it down to strain out any impurities.
Beeswax can then be heated by the consumer to create products like natural lotion bars, lip balms, wax wraps for food, and more. Beeswax in and of itself is a wonderful product! So versatile!
More Great Things About Beeswax
There’s some research to support that beeswax also has anti-inflammatory properties.
However, it’s important to note that beeswax may cause stomach upset when consumed. So for the purposes of this blog post, we are talking about topical use of beeswax.
Because beeswax may have traces of propolis, a resin-like mixture excreted by bees during work, it’s understood it has healing properties.
Those healing properties are what can help things like irritated skin.
Consider an area of the body that may get more exposure to work than others – hands, feet, elbows, knees. Make a DIY lotion bar and use it to soothe those irritated areas. The beeswax may heal something like eczema or cracked feet.
If you’re looking for other solutions to cracked feet, check out lavender sugar scrub.
For cracked lips, I highly recommend my beeswax lip mask. It’s so luxurious and moisturizing I use it to soothe chapped cheeks in the winter!

How many soaps does this recipe make?

Hi, Kenzie! These are hard lotion bars, not soap. I have found my recipe yields on average 4, 1.5 ounce lotion bars.
